Traveling within a 900km radius has never been so economical. Mitfahrgelegenheit is a German website that connects carpools for travelers over short and long distances. At an average price of 5-8€ per 100 km and so many options appearing daily - it's the perfect way to travel cheap and to travel on a whim. The only requirement is some basic German - enough to confirm a meeting place and to explain that you speak next to nil German (unless of course you do speak German, in which case, you already know about this site).
So far, I have really only taken it to and from Dresden and Freiburg but my experience has taught me a thing or two on German driving mannerisms and facts:

- Road side gas station bathrooms are equipped with toilets that have all kinds of self-cleaning gizmos
